Our History

CV Bintang Selatan is established in 1995, by having working experience in rattan furniture industry as its capital. During its establishment, it started with a workforce of 20 people, exporting one container per month to Japan. Now, CVBS is exporting not only to Japan, but Netherlands, Taiwan, and Spain as well.

In 2003, CVBS export delivers more than 50 containers each month with the help of 150 artisans. CVBS also has a low turnover rate, or CVBS rarely replace its workers. Each worker has a varied education level, which in majority are senior and junior high school. Still, every workers are a creative craftsmen.

CVBS strength lies in a good teamwork, hardworking, innovative to reach a greater efficiency to produce high quality work. This strength is produced by giving each worker a direction and knowledge. Rattan product is an art craft that requires patience, precision, and worker's craftsmanship. That is why, we consider our working relation an important matter.

We also have other major strength, which we has rattan resources for 10 to 12 months ahead. As Indonesia has an economy crisis, availability of rattan resources are quite scarce. This approach allow us to survive against economy crisis and compete in global market.

Since 2009, most Indonesia's rattan manufacturer are closing down. However CVBS still standing strong and exist to this day. CVBS keep updating with new designs until it reaches more than 900 items and exporting 15-20 containers each month.

What is Rattan?

Rattan come from tropical forest. Indonesia is the biggest rattan harvester in the world. This is because, Indonesia is located in tropical area and have an extensive forest area.

Rattan grows clumping, in which one clump can contains 100 to 300 rods. What makes rattan so special is that 1 rattan rod can reach more than 100 meters. Rattan plant will grow following its field where it resides which means rattan can soar upward or underground.

Do you know that despite there is 100 unique kind of rattan tree, only 30% of these kinds are currently harvested.

Why Rattan is Unique?

Rattan is a special kind of wood with several benefits. These benefits include its eco-friendly characteristic, high art value, can be formed easily, and also maintain environmental sustainability.

Rattan can be a furniture with beauty and high aesthetic value by processing it properly.When rattan is chopped, it is delivered to shelter via nearby river. In shelter rattan is cleaned up. Then it is fried with diesel fuel or petrol to extract rattan’s sap. If rattan’s sap leave unattended will ruin rattan’s color after it made into furniture. After frying rattan is then dried. Up to this process, dried rattan can be made directly into a furniture which still has its skin. We can process rattan to remove its skin by polishing.

How rattan can be made into Furniture?

Cutting

Rattan is cut based on its size. During this process, rattan that has bends or flexibility is selected.

Steaming

Cut rattan is put into steaming tube. One tube has a minimum diameter of 30cm with length between 4 to 6 meters. This process ensures rattan to be flexible so it can be bended as required.

Bending

This is the most basic technique to create rattan furniture. Often in this process, there can be damage such as rattan become broken.

Adjusting

Rattan is then adjusted to desired shape. In this process, often there is damage occurs such as rattan become cracked.

Assembling

Creating processed rattan into a three dimension figure as desired.

Quality Assurance

One approach is to tying the rattan furniture to hide splits between rattans. Another approach is to rub furniture’s surface to ensure its smoothness.

Painting

This process is an optional as rattan can stands by using its own natural color.
